George W. Bush made many mistakes in Iraq. The way he handled the rollout almost ensured the eventual American defeat. When the Twin Towers crumbled, Bush vowed to “rally the world” to our side in what would become the War on Terror. In order to obtain War Powers Authorization for the removal of Saddam Hussein, he set out to make the case for war before the American people.
Bush acted not so much as a world-historic leader but as a faithful executive of the reigning ideological trends. He was elected less than a decade after the fall of the USSR, when freedom seemed to be on the march and the received wisdom held that in the free market of ideas, the best one will always win. Making the case before America and the world seemed democratic and natural.
